After the loss of a family member, my spouse and I went into a season of wreckless spending. We aquired around $32,000 of loans and credit card debt. We were going into the red about $4-$500 a month buying whatever the impulse was at the time. The ironic thing was that I used to be a financial budget counselor and knew these bad habits would catch up to us sooner than later. Grief makes you do things you wouldn't usually do. I had heard a lot about Dave Ramsey and Financial Peace University and finally decided it was time to attend a class to see what I could learn. I fit into the category of doing okay, but could be doing better. In a few short weeks, I learned so much about financial areas like investments, insurance, budgeting, consumer debt and more. Had I attended this class several years ago when I first heard about Dave Ramsey, I would have avoided several costly mistakes. Someone asked me what I thought about the cost of the class, because there is a small price for the materials. My reply to that question is the cost of not attending the class sooner was thousands of dollars lost.
During the course of the class several things occured that were unexpected such as a refund for a big purchase and unexpected income. I was able to apply the extra funds to consumer debt and pay some debts down faster than expected. I believe that diligent efforts to get out of debt are met by a God who helps to shoulder the burden that you are under. Each person's financial picture will look different, but it's the same God that meets us where we are at and walks with us through the tough times.
